Jason Wu for Target :))))

I am sure you may have heard that Jason Wu is doing an exclusive private label line for Target. Jason Wu gained his popularity when his design for FLOTUS Michelle Obama was a show stopper. As expected, Wu's designs were sold out with hours of Target making the line available online. Interestingly, when consumer demand is driven by exclusivity there will be opportunists looking to make capital gains on Targets' business deal with Wu. So, part of the WU product wipe out was a result of enterprising individuals purchasing in bulk to sell the items on Ebay at a profit. You got to love the free market :)

Below are some of Wu's designs from Target. You can check out more designs on Target's website, but of course, considering the complexity of the supply chain process, replenishment of Wu's line in store and online is going to take a couple of weeks!!! Wu Wu Wu!!

The advertisement is also the most adorable thing out!

Valentine's Day and Retail Therapy?

Hi Readers,

So I stumbled upon this site and read this article called Retail Therapy. I am always amazed at how commercialized our society has become in regards to consumerism. They make it seem so positive to be constantly spending for each holiday. Love is a great motivator for people to dip into their pockets and spend considerably on their loved ones. Diane's von Furstenbug Picks for Spring

We all know that Dianne von Furstenberg is a big deal in the fashion world. Literally, the Project Runway All Stars' designers literally burst into paroxysms of awe and excitement when they heard they were to design an outfit that would appeal to her design aesthetic. The trick is they only had 6 hours.

How often are we given an awesome opportunity to go somewhere, meet someone special, but we only have a couple hours to decide what we are going to wear, to hair, makeup, and show up looking confident to impress? So how do you accomplish this? Think classic vs edgy and accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Simple chic always works well, but trying to be too edgy in a short space of time may cause more anxiety and decrease your level of productivity for achieving an awe inspiring look.

Diane is all about classic chic. For spring, she says it's all about classic cuts, floral prints, pastel colored loose fitting layered pieces. Michael Costello (PRallstars' winner of this challenge) in the video below, though an incredibly skillful tailor, took a smart approach by going simple but classy chic. So on my quest for information to do a post for my male friends who often cry neglect, I stumbled upon this interesting development. Who would have thought that there was a way to get an aroma on your clothing without perfume, spilling, coffee, or just buying the freshest smelling detergent or fabric softener you could find. But alas it is fashion, and as we all know there are no rules with fashion.

So I present you with the new fad - Scratch and Sniff Raspberry scented jeans from the designers of Naked and Famous. They apply a special coat that includes mini microcapsules to the denim and then bake it to seal the fruity raspberry scent. Oh and they come $150 a pop. Celebrating Project Runway

I knew the day would come when I decided to revisit blogging. It is a passion that requires immense commitment and while your commitment may wane, your passion lives on.

Today, I want to blog about two project runway stars.

(1) Anya my country mate is speaking at the College of New Jersey about being in the fashion industry and her experiences as a reality star. The lecture will be held at Mayo Concert Hall from 8-10pm. I wouldn't miss it if I were you...she is a very smart, practical, and down to earth woman!

(2) Christian Siriano's collection. I loved this guy when he was on Project Runway. He was a skillfully fast tailor and confident as hell! However, he was sweet and produced fierce fashions. There is something about knowing your worth and being able to articulate your worth. We oftentimes shrink ourselves and undersell our strengths for fear that others deem us "cocky" but the only way you rise to the top is by asserting yourself as "top" worthy! He just released his 2012 Spring/Summer collection. I love the ease of his line and the inspiration from the Middle Ages herigaut with the slit and hanging sleeves. I have always been a fan of the shaggy styled skirts. His collection has a practical ease and sophisticated style.

Homeless Chic? Huh?

Some months ago I was walking on campus with my TA from New Jersey, and asked her about the tattered dress style of some passers by. To my amazement she sought to enlighten me, stating that this style of dress is called homeless chic! Huh? Ok, I am very aware that my primary socialization in the South (US) has limited my awareness of the breadth of up-North fashion trends, but homeless chic? The homeless chic style is a trickle up fashion trend from the homeless on the street. To successfully pull of this style you just wear oversized layers, torn jeans, washout clothes, etc. Now be mindful that the celebrities that don this style are dressed in thousands of dollars, however, I am sure you can pull it off for cheaper, ok! Anywhoos, she told me a pioneer of this look is Mary-Kate/Ashley Olson, so I have a few photos to introduce to this style.

Mary-Kate Olsen - It is obvious to us all that the jacket is way too big and the pants are.....urghh no need to discuss this look.....it is what it is!

I am not saying try this look, as you are not a celebrity and may be diagnosed as crazy if you cannot confidently pull it off. However, I am bringing awareness to the fact that there are people who dress this way and may not even know that this look is a trend.

What is it with HAIR?

As women, I know we are already bombarded with immeasurable beauty standards from the media, and the futile, but constant quest to be perfect. However, poll a group of women on what they think is the beauty ideal, or what constitutes perfect hair, body, or aesthetic beauty, and you will be overwhelmed with diverse data. This weekend I was out with my girlfriend who loves thick, bountiful natural hair. Sometimes, I like the hair under admiration, sometimes I don't. But it got me thinking that as women, we often want what we do not have. And our journey to self acceptance is a constant rhetoric of self sabotage and admiration of what we perceive we are not blessed with. I remember my days of feeling insecure. Walking by men was the hardest thing for me to do b/c I was so body conscious. In regards to my hair, I remember those days when I would wish it was a little bit longer, a little bit softer, whatever! However, in the past few years I sorta gave up the hair focus. I started thinking about what it means to have someone else's hair. My neighbor from childhood had ridiculously thick hair and I remembered how long it took to get her hair styled. Then I have a friend with curly, soft, long hair and I remembered her complaining about it getting tangled all the time. Then I remember the friend with the fast growing hair that complained about the inability to keep a short hairstyle past 2 months b/c her hair grows back too quickly.....it became an investment in chopping. What did I learn?

I learned that we just have to love the hair we got! God gave it to us for a reason and it is beautiful in its own right....in fact, it should be beautiful for you. While we can admire the beauty of someone else's hair, as I mentioned previously, our admiration is usually one sided.....an obsession with the pros. How often do we think of the shortcomings? I for one have hung up that hair battle, I admire from afar, but dag......I took a damn long time to figure out how to work with what I got.....ain't got no time to learn another.

Above and below are some of my friends (and I) with different natural hair types and styles, and to me all the hair is gorgeous! However, I am sure each person has a complaint that she can share with you about her hair. Just goes to show, you only understand the package until you've got it!

Ladies, I hope this spoke to you in some way. I am just saying what you have is enough and surely beautiful ;)

After writing this I am going to watch Chris Rock's "Good Hair" documentary ;)

Pure Honesty is Beautiful! (For Everyone)

There is something to be said about being pure, open, and honest. Hey nobody is perfect and we have all been through some s#!$. I am just saying, when I looked at that Rhianna interview I thought one thing: she was so beautiful in her purest moments of admission. Let's be clear! While there are those who will say she only did the interview to promote her new album...I say to you..."ah yeah! she surely did! but, who's gonna check her boo?" But the focus should be on her execution and transparency. Having been through some rocky relationships myself, I commend her honesty and ability to be truthful, regardless of what you may think of her. The most telling moment and aesthetically beautiful visual for me was after she admitted to reuniting with Chris, but eventually left for reasons of social responsibility. She ponderously stated (not verbatim), "I realized that my selfish reason for love was not enough to stay. And while Chris may never hit me again, what about the girl who is watching me, (using her as inspiration), who stays in her situation and her boyfriend kills her!" Ok, let me tell you. Ain't no one watching that interview, at that moment, could say that that girl did not put much thought and sleepless nights into that decision to be selfless.

Translation to us (regular folk):
Yes, we are not celebrities and the world does not have insight into our darkest moments. But I beg you to stretch the boundaries of your role in society. We are all brothers, sisters, cousins, teachers, opinion leaders, and thus celebrities to somebody. We all have someone we admire even if it is expressed verbally or through the admiration in our eyes. This person's words and actions can influence the way we perceive things or decisions we make. Thus, we too, as insignificant as we may believe we are in this world, have a responsibility to be socially responsible. We must think about the fact that our decision to stay in an unhealthy situation, be it work, school, relationships, and so forth, one that we are clearly getting the sh#tty end of the stick, is influencing someone else who's looking and listening, to do the same.

It is difficult:
Yes, it is so difficult to live your life caring about the impact your actions may have on others. But guess what! Thinking unselfishly is what leads us to be happier people and actually forces us (1) to choose better for ourselves and (2) be blessed with so much more than we "thought" we had.

The sartorial twist:
Hey, but regardless of the stress in your life...take a hint from Rhianna....conquer it with style!! lol! Ain't nobody gotta know what you are going through!! Before you step out looking like you just got hit by bus, lost your whole family, friends, and your job....stay home! I have had my days of leaving my house looking a hot mess to get food....and I say to that Raedene, "boo why did you just not order take out?"

Taking Risks: Stockings edition!

A guaranteed way to add fab to your outfit is to wear some fashionable stockings. Now choosing the right stockings to give your outfit the added edge takes a little experimentation, however, when you get the right complement, you feel as if you have conquered a fashion challenge. This weekend I felt like getting creative with my stockings. Having done it in the past, I wanted to see if I could get the thrill I felt from the first time I took a risk with my stockings. Joy of Giving Back!

Since I have been in the US I have had many people give to me in unimaginable ways. The most beautiful gifts I got were that of kindness, love, care, and trust. Trust in that, I have had strangers open their doors to me and let me into their homes without thinking twice. I have been humbled many times because I realized that girls are fabulous. From childhood, I have always had fabulous female friends, however, I have learned that there is a lack of trust in American society about the ability to find good, trustworthy, "uncatty" female friends. This weekend I had the pleasure of giving back. Stretching out my hand to someone who felt the burden of not having cool, single friends to kick it with on the town every now and then. The surprise and gratitude of the girl, made me realize how simple it is to share your blessings with others. While I did not think twice about inviting this girl to our "freak 'em" dress girls' night out, her humbled gratitude reminded me that in life it is the small things that count! Finally, the most aesthetically beautiful thing on the face of this earth is seeing a smile on someone else's face and knowing that you contributed in some minor way to putting it there!

To those strangers (outside of my family and childhood friends) who walked into my life since I have been in the US and put a smile on my face, without any obligation to do so, I say thank you! Special shout outs below ;) (pics are limited to what I have!)

I remember those nights back home on Sunday evenings cleaning up and preparing our uniforms for school the following day. Sunday nights were always cool, temperature wise. Sometimes it rained and sometimes the wind ruffled through the trees as my siblings and I bonded in familial love. We will always listen to the "The Quiet Storm" on 93.5 where all the oldies were played and sing along. My friend Raynna is just one of those beauties who has a full head of soft, curly, natural hair. Now best believe, she must take a while to dry her hair, but hey everything has it pros and cons. I heard she tried Kinky Curly and love the result. Women Under Pressure 2 B Fake!!

It is a phenomenon that has been discussed over and over again but to no avail. The fact that women are held to these unreasonable, unhealthy, high standards of physical perfection by the media and their male counterparts. Now I have highlighted two main sources of pressure and I will discuss each separately:

(1) There has been the ongoing standard that models should be anorexic. I say anorexic because they are oftentimes required to be under their ideal weight. I guess that is why models are usually wanted at younger ages before their body morphs into their hereditary shape/size. Designers assert that in order for their clothes to look good on the runway they must have tall and slim girls to fit the sample sizes. Yeah right! Sell me that bridge to nowhere! The problem is that designers are not making clothes with the average woman in mind, they are making it for this very small sector of society (tall/slim girls). My friends who are average size cringe at the notion of having to find a dress or jeans to complement their body type. Why should this be if they are in the majority? Furthermore, the magazines are photoshopping photos of celebrities to make them fit this superficial societal ideal of tall and slim...an ideal they created. I just read this article about a Ralph Lauren model, Filippa Hamilton, who was appalled when R. Lauren photo- shopped a photo of her, and subsequently fired her for being too fat.....a size 4!!! I am mature enough to admit that she most likely signed a contract that specified her weight requirements, however, she is 5" 10, 120 pounds for crying out loud, underweight for her height. With the recession, I guess losing weight from tight budgets may not be a bad thing lol, however, being underweight to sell clothing that does not fit the average girl is something totally different. (I have the link for this article below).

(2) Men!!

My issue when it comes to the standards men hold for women's physical attributes is that half of them do not hold themselves to these standards. I am so sick of talking to my male counterparts who are terribly out of shape, who do not even try to work out, but have the most stringent standards for women. There is a glaring Double Standard!!! One that states that women should understand the genetic makeup of men, and thus their tendancy to put high values on physical/aesthetic beauty. I understand that men are physical, however, with the emancipation and liberation of women, I think the playing field has been leveled somewhat. So the man wants the woman to have his kids and shrink right back to her pre-natal weight....while he on the other hand gets fat from admiring her perfect physique. The man wants his girl to be model pretty, slim, nice teeth, nice feet, oh and the best one is the infamous line "I like my girls natural!!" I am here to tell you that most men do not have a clue about what a natural girl looks like, and from my experience, the truly natural girls they would not date. Nope, what I think they want is the girl who appears natural to the untrained eye, but pays attention to her physical appearance. I say to my male readers....cut women some slack or live up to your own standards. Just like you want us PHAT (pretty, hot, and tempting) we like you PHAT (pulchritudinous, higher educated, alluring, and toned)...sounds like a lot right? Sounds like women want the whole package right? The fact is that the double standard is there to be addressed. Honestly, while I am addressing the pressures on women, I am a proponent of being fair and realistic! Everyone, should hold others to a standard that s/he can realistically maintain. If you are overweight and refuse to exercise, why do you eliminate someone who reflects what you are? I believe this pressure to be something you are not has led to my previous post on DIY (Do It Yourself) Plastic Surgery. What a mess!!

The Scoop on "She by Sheree"

So I figured part of keeping you abreast of the scoop is getting it to you earlier than the rest. So I found some pics of Sheree Whitfield's, (The Real Housewives of Atlanta), clothing line debut. Now, based on the progression of the show, I was thinking that it would atleast be well planned b/c my boy was helping her out, even though she acted like she did not want his suggestions. Anywhoos, she launched her line and launched her new beau. Sheree's inspiration is the classic styles of Dolce and Gabbanna. Her line was a combination of furs, satins, strapless, mesh, etc. I must say....she seemed to hit every fashion trend....good for her ;)

If you have not noticed, designers have gone buck wild with straps and buckles on shoes. Is as if they are vying to see who can strap in your feet the best lol. Battle of Colors - How do I Pick???

Have you ever seen a style you wanted...one that had a variety of colors and wondered..."Dag, I can't decided which one I want!!" I believe women oftentimes face this dilemma. While, this momentary dissonance may be uncomfortable and mentally stressful.....trust....it is one of the most critically significant decisions you make when choosing what to buy.

Below are some guidelines for choosing the right color :)

1. What color is required for the event? (Please do not step outside of the color requirement and stand out like a sore thumb!)
2. Do an audit of your closet and see what colors you need and colors you buy way too often.
3. Pull at least five of your favorite outfits (tops/dresses/jumpers) ones that you get complimented on the most. Take a pic of them to note the color. These colors most likely represent your POWER COLORS (Colors that make you glow)!!
4. If shopping in store, try on a few colors and look closely to see the interaction of the color with your complexion/hue undertones. Some colors make you glow and some make you look dull. Stay away from those that make you look drab b/c they are NOT your power colors.
5. Believe it or not, your power colors lift your spirits! You will try it on and feel like dancing...or you wil simply feel sexier...or more powerful! Trust me!

Rich black tones are great!!
Black is typically a hit on fairer tones b/c of the contrast in colors. If you are of darker tones (like myself) remember that black is fine...once it is not lots of black...e.g. your arms may have to be out and you will need to have metallic or colored jewelery close to your face to lift your complexion.

This color d/n have a high level of intensity, thus:
If you are of lighter complexion, this dress may simply look flush on you. If you are going for that look, your accessories must be dynamic but classic (no colors). If you are of medium-dark tones you have to be cautious that this color d/n make you look drab.

Are you aware that there are women who are so desparate to fix their perceived physical imperfections that they are trying DIY (Do It Yourself) Plastic Surgery! What the HELL????

I first learned about this watching some DVR reruns of the Tyra Show. Maybe I am late on this and I am baffled, but I understand. There are so many women who are holding on to the hurts and heckles from their childhood and teenage years. I understand...

I grew up hearing that I was thick like mud, my breasts were huge, etc. Thank God at some stage I decided to Build A Bridge and Got Over Those Heckles!!!

The fact is.....You Have to Believe You are Beautiful.....and insecurities breed addictions....which oftentimes.....lead to death. Think about it....but in the mean time watch this report on this sad woman :(

Let me confess.....
I am a huge Vampire Diaries fan!!! This show airs on CMT, Thursday nights at 8/7 Central. This show was such a hit that it blew CMT ratings out the water the first time it aired!
